UNIT SUMMARY
In this unit the students will observe the enormity
of biodiversity. They will understand that the Earth
is an ecosystem which contains all other ecosystems.
It is like a jigsaw puzzle where every little piece is an
important piece. They will discover that all organisms
are interconnected.
They will identify the main relationships between
living things. They will interpret food chains and food
webs and design their own models. They will enjoy
the challenge of connecting the organisms in order
to produce a sustainable system.
The students will also recognise how human
activities modify the environment and will develop
an awareness of human responsibility towards the
Earth and the living things which share the planet.
The students will learn that extinction has occurred
for millions of years but they will realise that
humans are responsible for most of the recent loss
of biodiversity. At this age the students will be
interested in, if not passionate about, protecting
biodiversity.
Encourage your students to investigate more.
There is a wealth of information available and
students should be encouraged to find out more by
themselves.
They will conduct an experiment to create a living
ecosystem following the steps of scientific method.
