UNIT 6: ELECTRICITY

UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit the students will study and extend their knowledge of one of the fundamental types of energy – electricity. They will learn about the different properties of electricity and its practical applications: how we use electricity and how we apply this energy in everyday life. Simple experiments, in which the students can observe the characteristics of electricity, will help the students understand the nature of this type of energy. 

The students will be able to explain their conclusions, verbally and in writing, on how electricity functions. The students will focus on the properties of electricity and how it is produced, and then they will look at its influence in the last 200 years and how we have become reliant on this type of energy today.

UNIT 6: BUSINESS AND MONEY

UNIT SUMMARY 

In this unit the students will be introduced to some basics of business, personal finance and the challenges of running a company. They will begin by finding out how companies are structured and what entrepreneurs need to think about when starting a new company.

Then they will learn in more detail about the different kinds of fixed and variable costs involved in running a business. This is important because more and more young people are entering into business, sometimes even while still students. 

The students will learn about ways to save money and how to plan a budget in their daily life to help them manage their own money. This will require some basic maths skills. In this unit, students will also investigate what they would need to consider if they were starting their own business and present their ideas to the class. They will also learn about socially responsible companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

UNIT 5 : LIGHT AND HEAT

UNIT SUMMARY

Here the students will study and extend their knowledge of two specific types of energy – heat and light. These two types of energy are fundamental to the understanding of how energy works, and here they form an introduction to aspects of physics and chemistry. 

The students will learn about the different properties of heat and light and their practical application: how we use light and heat, and how we apply these types of energy in life. Simple experiments in which the students can observe the characteristics of light and heat and their interaction with different materials will help the students understand the nature of energy. 

The students will then be able to explain their conclusions, verbally and in writing, on how light and heat function. They will focus on the properties of light, including reflection and refraction. Students will also learn about heat transfer, including information on conductors and insulators, and their application in everyday situations.
